Twenty wickets fall on second day as South Africa chases 310 to level India series

South Africa's nine-year unbeaten streak in away Test series is in jeopardy after an extraordinary second day of the third Test against India in Nagpur on Thursday, when 20 wickets fell on a wickedly turning pitch.

The visitors will start the third day at 2-32, chasing a further 278 runs for victory in a match where 32 wickets have fallen over two days on the dusty, deteriorating pitch at the VCA stadium.

It's only the second time since 1912 that as many as 32 wickets have fallen on the opening two days of a Test, the other coming in the South Africa v Pakistan Test at Cape Town in 2007.

Dean Elgar was unbeaten on 10 and skipper Hashim Amla was on three at stumps.

Opener Stiaan van Zyl was dismissed again by spinner Ravichandran Ashwin for a duck, and nightwatchman Imran Tahir was out to spin partner Ravindra Jadeja for four.

Earlier, South Africa were bowled out for 79 in their first innings and India were dismissed for 173 in their second knock.

South Africa need a win to level the four-match series after losing the first Test in Mohali by 108 runs. The rain-hit second game in Bangalore was drawn.
