Rain frustrates Royals, Kolkata

Points split after heavy rain causes play to be abandoned at Eden Gardens

Shane Watson's Rajasthan Royals have jumped to the top of the IPL8 points table without having to lift a bat or ball.

The Royals' clash with Kolkata Knight Riders was abandoned before a ball was bowled thanks to incessant rain in the lead-up to and through a chunk of the scheduled game time.

When the heavy rain cleared at 5pm local time it was hoped a shortened game could be played, but by the cutoff time at 7.30pm the ground at Eden Gardens was still too wet to allow any play.

The pitch was dry but the outfield was the cause of concern for the umpires, with wet patches found during their final inspection.

The 'no result' saw Rajasthan move to 11 points from eight games, moving ahead of the Chennai Super Kings on the table.

Chennai have 10 points but more games in hand.

Kolkata remained third on the ladder and will take on the Super Kings in their next game on Tuesday, while Rajasthan will play the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday.
