Coulter-Nile, KKR destroy RCB for 49

Kohli, de Villiers and co bundled out in record fashion at Eden Gardens

The result: Kolkata Knight Riders 131 (Narine 34, Chahal 3-16) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 49 (Coulter-Nile 3-21, Woakes 3-6, de Grandhomme 3-4) by 82 runs

The match in a tweet: Scenes! Chasing a below-par 132, RCB were skittled for just 49 to slip to last place in #IPL10

The collapse: It doesn’t get much worse than this for RCB. In fact, only nine teams in the history of T20 cricket have been dismissed for fewer than Bangalore’s 49 on Sunday. The innings, which lasted 9.3 overs, is the lowest team total in Indian Premier League history, with no batsman reaching double figures. Overseas imports Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Woakes and Colin de Grandhomme each snared three wickets to defend a 131.

The golden duck: Virat Kohli was not impressed when he edged his first ball, and the third of the innings, to second slip from the bowling of Coulter-Nile. Kohli was seething as he left the field after a spectator moved behind the bowler’s arm as the ball was about to be delivered. The golden globe was third in IPL cricket for Kohli, with his side on the losing side each time he’s been dismissed from the first ball he’s faced.

The man of the match: Coulter-Nile continued his excellent return to elite cricket with three top-order wickets to kick-start the brilliant Bangalore batting collapse. After removing Kohli with a sublime outswinger, the right-armer dismissed Proteas superstar AB de Villiers with a short-pitched ball before a leading edge was the undoing of Kedar Jadav. Coulter-Nile now has eight wickets in three matches a staggering average of 10.50.

The top-order cameo: In what turned out be comfortably the highest score of the match, the 34 from West Indies star spinner Sunil Narine opening the batting got the hosts off to a terrific start. Facing compatriot Samuel Badree in the first over of the match, Narine hit three consecutive fours then a six to put RCB on the back foot from the get go. Three more fours followed before he was out as the powerplay neared its end, but the damage had been done. The next highest score in the match was 18 by Woakes.

The wash-up: The loss dropped Bangalore below Gujarat to last place on the table with only two wins from seven matches. It’s going to take a minor miracle for last year’s runners-up to make the play-offs in IPL 10, but with Kohli, de Villiers and Gayle in the same side anything is possible. For KKR, they’re flying in second place and travel to Pune for Wednesday’s match against the Rising Supergiant.
