Rain ends day one of Windies tour match

West Indies struggle on opening day of tour against the CA XI at Allan Border Field

Rain has ensured an early end to the first day of the West Indies' tour match against a second-string Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane.

Showers forced players off the field just half-an-hour into Wednesday's final session with the Windies struggling at 6-154.

Officials finally pulled the pin on the day's play almost two hours later.

Showers had forced an early lunch break and rain fell intermittently throughout the day at Allan Border Field.

Darren Bravo is not out 46 but should have been caught on one trying to slog leg-spinner Cameron Boyce.

The Windies' batsmen have failed to threaten a CA XI line-up featuring six players making their first-class debuts.

Pick of the CA XI attack has been rookie James Bazley (2-27) who only received a nod for the clash when he replaced Victoria's Ryan Sidebottom (foot).

The lowly ranked Windies rested fast-bowling spearhead Jerome Taylor for the match but boast a batting line-up expected to feature in the first Test against world No.2 Australia from December 10 in Hobart.

Their limp effort on a docile Allan Border Field deck, albeit in miserable conditions, is a major concern for the visitors ahead of their three-Test series against Australia.

It is the only tour match for the Windies before next week's opening Test.

The Windies have not recorded a Test series win away against any nation except for minnows Zimbabwe and Bangladesh since a 1-0 triumph in February 1995 in New Zealand.

The Windies are third last in the ICC's Test rankings - ahead of only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe - and have stuck with the same squad which suffered a 2-0 series whitewash last month in Sri Lanka.

Rain ensured an early lunch break on Wednesday with the Windies at 2-52.

The Windies resumed after the interval under dark skies and promptly lost 3-17 before Bravo and captain Jason Holder tried to steady the ship.

Holder struck two fours and a six in his 34-ball knock of 26, dominating a sixth-wicket stand of 32, before being caught behind off Queensland quick Simon Milenko (2-33).

Bravo has put on 39 runs for the seventh wicket with Carlos Brathwaite (25no) - the highest stand of the Windies' innings.
