A brilliant opening partnership between Beth Mooney and Kirby Short helped the Heat down the Hurricanes in Hobart

The score: Brisbane Heat 2-153 (Mooney 78*, Short 43) in 20 overs beat Hobart Hurricanes 8-138 (Satterthwaite 57) in 20 overs by 15 runs.

The hero: Beth Mooney has been in great touch with the bat for the Heat and she continued her purple patch by notching up her fourth half-century of WBBL|02. Mooney was in majestic touch, hitting the ball with precision and sweet timing. Mooney made her intentions clear from just the fifth ball she faced, using her feet to loft Hayley Matthews over mid-off for four. Every time the 'Canes bowlers erred in line or length, Mooney capitalised to send the ball rocketing to the ropes. She hit seven boundaries in her entertaining innings of 78no from 60 balls.

The support cast: The responsibility of captaincy brought out the best in Kirby Short. The dynamic opener reached her highest score (43) of WBBL|02 and in the process demoralised the Hobart bowlers. Short's driving through the covers against the fast bowlers and spinners was a privilege to watch as she put on 86 for the opening wicket with Mooney. Short's innings of 43 came off 36 balls and included six boundaries.

Short thrives as a leader

The stat: Mooney has now scored 321 runs from nine matches with an average of 53.5 and is second on the runs scorers list for WBBL|02 so far, trailing Stars skipper Meg Lanning by just 63 runs. Mooney and Lanning are the only two players to have registered four half-centuries in the tournament.

The consolation act: Amy Satterthwaite kept the Hurricanes in the game right until the last over with a gritty half-century. The Kiwi was powerful down the ground as she kept sending the full ball past the bowlers with consummate ease. The tall elegant left-hander shared a 52-run partnership with Hayley Matthews to keep the Hurricanes in the hunt chasing a formidable total of 2-153. She finally perished in the final over but not before she managed to hit 57 from 48 balls.
