Match Recap: Scorchers defeat Stars

Perth Scorchers jump to second on the WBBL|02 ladder with a comprehensive 33-run victory over the Melbourne Stars

Match in a tweet: Brunt's brilliant all-round performance sinks the Stars as the Scorchers cement second spot

The score: Perth Scorchers 4-130 (Ebsary 45 no) in 20 overs defeated Melbourne Stars 9-97 (Sciver 31) in 20 overs by 33 runs.

The hero: Katherine Brunt destroyed the Stars with the bat and then backed it up an economical spell with the ball. The English import first clobbered 32 from 14 balls including two massive sixes off Southern Stars spinner Kristen Beams. She would back that up with a sensational opening burst that included the prized wicket of Meg Lanning for 12. Brunt capped of her brilliant day with figures of 4-0-16-1 to lead the Scorchers to an emphatic win.

The support cast: Scorchers veteran Lauren Ebsary made patient 45 from 53 balls in the middle order to ensure they posted a competitive total of 4-130. Ebsary worked the ball into gaps precisely and also ran between the wickets hard to ensure the Scorchers kept up the momentum through the middle overs. Ebsary and Brunt combined for an unbeaten partnership of 51 from 31 balls to take the game away from the Stars.

The catches: Perth Scorchers were magnificent in the field for the duration of the Stars innings. Not only did they inflict two brilliant run outs but Elyse Villani, Piepa Cleary and Chloe Piparo all took superb catches.

The consolation effort: It was an outstanding effort from Stars allrounder Natalie Sciver. Not only did she keep the Stars in the hunt with a fine 31 with the bat but she also managed to pick up the wicket of the in-form Heather Graham (15) with her crafty spinners.  Unfortunately for Sciver, she just didn't have enough support on the day.

The next stop: Scorchers will now host the Thunder on Friday while the Stars travel to the Blundstone Arena to tackle the Hurricanes on 20th January.
