Renegades left Star struck by KP, Zampa

Pietersen stars with the bat before Zampa cleans up with the ball as the Stars get their revenge in the return Derby

The result: Melbourne Stars 7-200 (Pietersen 73, Quiney 51, Pattinson 3-44) defeated Melbourne Renegades 9-154 (White 38, Zampa 3-19) by 46 runs.

The KP factor: Kevin Pietersen put on a T20 batting masterclass to lead the Melbourne Stars to an imposing total. Pietersen was in no mood to waste time, belting the first of his three sixes from the first ball he faced. "I'm in boundary mode at the moment," Pietersen – who was mic’d up – told the Channel 10 commentary team. "As long as I pick the right options, I should be okay." He picked plenty of right options, belting 73 from 46 balls before finally being brought undone by Windies spinner Sunil Narine in the 17th over.

The Zampa factor: KP starred with the bat, then it was the Adam Zampa show with the ball. While he didn’t pull off any outrageous run outs the likes of which saw him end up with a bloody, swollen nose in last year’s Etihad derby, he certainly made his mark on Saturday night, claiming the scalps of Marcus Harris, Cameron White and Trent Lawford to finish with career-best figures of 3-19.

The support act: While Pietersen ultimately went bigger, it was all Rob Quiney in the early stages of the Stars innings. Returning to the top of the order after overcoming a hamstring niggle, Quiney set up the Stars innings nicely, belting three sixes as he raced his way to a half-century before being caught for a 30-ball 51.

The cameo: Coming in in the 14th over, Stars skipper David Hussey produced a seriously entertaining cameo. He took an instant liking to the bowling of James Pattinson, striking three boundaries in an over off the Renegades quick, and belted 20 runs off the first five balls he faced before ultimately being run out for 27.

The stat: Pietersen's 73 was his ninth half-century from just 20 Big Bash League innings.

The comeback kid: Renegades quick James Pattinson didn't have to wait long to taste success in his return from a hamstring injury, claiming the wicket of Luke Wright in his first over. He also looked to have lost none of his explosiveness, with his third ball clocked at 145km/h. While he was ultimately expensive – bearing the brunt of Hussey’s late-innings onslaught – but looked to have lost none of his explosiveness, finishing with 3-44 from his four overs.

The cult hero: No one gets a bigger response from the Big Bash crowds than veteran spinner Brad Hogg. While the 45-year-old didn't manage to pick up a wicket on Saturday night, he did manage to post his highest BBL score, delighting the Etihad Stadium crowd when he struck a boundary in the final over before finishing unbeaten on 9. It took his career tally of Big Bash runs from 19 to 28, boosting his average to 4.

The ‘ouch’ moment: Pattinson’s pace caused problems for the Stars batting line-up, but none more so than Quiney, who copped a menacing 146km/h delivery in his box, leaving him doubled over in pain. He got some revenge one ball later however, driving the paceman down the ground for four.

The next stops: The Renegades head to Sydney, where they’ll meet the Sixers at the SCG on Monday, while the Stars will host the Adelaide Strikers at the MCG on Tuesday.
