The match in a tweet: 10-wicket win! Openers Maxi & Sos mow down Renegades' 170 with record stand to reignite Scorchers' title credentials #BBL05

The heroes: If Chris Lynn's masterclass in blasting last night got the country talking about him as a World T20 prospect, then Michael Klinger (90no from 58) again stamped his own credentials with another clinical performance to help the Scorchers to victory. Klinger is in such good touch that it's simply expected he'll contribute strongly, and he let no-one down once again at Etihad Stadium, reaching 50 from 34 balls to dominate the early stages of the run chase. His opening partner Shaun Marsh (76no from 54) is nearing Klinger-like consistency at present and the pair atop the order is a dream for Scorchers fans. Marsh eased his way into his innings before happily greeting Nathan Hauritz with a pair of massive sixes to surge towards his half-century. It was intelligent, controlled batting.

The victim: Nathan Hauritz was given two overs and went for 0-29, Marsh seizing on his arrival at the crease and dispelling the theory that the offie would be difficult for the left-handers. It was a forgettable night for another tweaker, Brad Hogg of the Scorchers, who went for 44 from four overs without taking a wicket.

The turning point: Jason Behrendorff took two wickets in two balls and in the blink of an eye the Renegades' potential 200 total had to be recalculated. The first of those was Chris Gayle (41 from 35), who had just slammed Brad Hogg for three sixes and looked set to light up Etihad Stadium. The second was the key wicket of Cameron White, whose drive Behrendorff snapped up in his follow-through. It was match-turning stuff.

The stat: This is the first time in Big Bash history that a side has enjoyed a 10-wicket win. The fact that it came chasing 170 is simply remarkable. Klinger and Marsh's unbroken stand of 171 falls one run short of the highest-ever BBL partnership.

The consolation effort: Aaron Finch looked in serious nick in blazing 72 from 48 balls, quickly getting the ball rolling for the Renegades by taking young Scorchers opener Joel Paris for 4, 4, 6 from the first three deliveries he bowled.

The wash-up: Anyone who doubted the Scorchers' ability for a three-peat is probably reconsidering that notion. An all-round bowling group and phenomenally consistent opening batsmen is the key to their success, and they certainly play to those strengths. For the Renegades, it's one win from three and, given the fact Finch himself decided to have a bowled in the final over of the night, serious cause for concern.

The next stops: The Renegades next take on their neighbours, the Stars, in the Melbourne derby on January 2, while the Scorchers host the Sixers to round out a double header on that same day.
