Match Recap: Scorchers defeat Renegades

Elyse Villani notched up her second half century of the season to guide the Scorchers to a comfortable win at Etihad Stadium

Match in a tweet: Villani's flying start proves to be difference as the Scorchers down Renegades by 32 runs

The score: Perth Scorchers 5-155 in 20 overs (Villani 60) defeated Melbourne Renegades 7-123 in 20 overs (Molineux 37) by 32 runs

The hero: Who else but the Southern Stars opener? Elyse Villani continues to produce the goods at the start, paving the way for a Scorchers win. Once again it was her imperious touch at the start that gave the Scorchers the platform to score formidable total of 155. Villani took toll on anything short early in her inning before hitting some crisp lofted drives at the end of her innings. Villani hit nine boundaries through pure timing on her way to 60 from 43 balls. Villani's second fifty of the season makes her the leading run scorer for the Scorchers.

The consolation act: We are nearly halfway through the season and there is no doubt that the emerging player of WBBL|02 is Sophie Molineux. The 18-year-old was savage against one of the leading fast bowlers in world cricket in Anya Shrubsole. Molineux stood tall to thump the English bowler over her head for a series of boundaries to give Renegades the hope of chasing down 155 for victory. Molineux run-a-ball innings of 37 along with 1-16 with ball once again highlighted why Molineux is a star on the rise.

Hit Wicket:  The Scorchers skipper was out in bizarre fashion at Etihad Stadium when she hit the stumps with her bat while trying to play a hook a short ball from Lea Tahuhu. Bates pivoted on her right foot, played made contact with the ball, but in her follow through knocked the stumps over with her bat.

The turning point: Chasing 156 for victory the Renegades were ready for a late assault with Molineux (37) and Danni Wyatt (24) well set at the crease. Needing 83 from 42 balls Molineux took a chance by exposing her stumps but was cleaned bowled for 37. The wicket gave the Scorchers the confidence to run away with a 32 run win.

The next stop: The Renegades face off against the Stars on the New Year's Day blockbuster at the MCG while the Hurricanes have week off before taking on the Thunder.
