Stars win derby in amazing scenes

Match ends with consecutive run-outs followed by dramatic run-out controversy

The second Melbourne derby of BBL|04 has provided arguably the most dramatic conclusion to a match in four seasons of the KFC T20 Big Bash League, with the Stars getting home over the Renegades in unthinkable fashion from the final delivery of the match.

The Stars were seemingly cruising after a spectacular 120-run stand between Kevin Pietersen and Glenn Maxwell, but in their pursuit of 154, they suddenly lost 4-9 - including run-outs from the third- and second-last balls of the match - before the match concluded in remarkable fashion.

One of the most unbelievable finishes in BBL history

Needing one from the final ball to win - and keep their season alive - Tom Triffitt drove to Callum Ferguson at short mid on, who dove and flicked the ball back toward the stumps.

Whether the ball hit the stumps or not is up for debate, as bowler Nathan Rimmington's forearm made contact with the stumps, prompting the removal of the bails.

After an agonising wait, the third umpire gave Triffitt not out, handing the Stars victory and all but bringing an end to the Renegades' season.

All of this had appeared particularly unlikely only 15 minutes earlier, after Maxwell and Pietersen had lit up the MCG with some stunning stroke play.

Maxwell and Pietersen were in outstanding form

Maxwell returned to form in sensational fashion, raising his half-century from just 28 balls and going on to make 66 in a performance that included an array of stunning strokes.

Pietersen too, was in devastating touch, his 49 including a switch-hit six as he combined with Maxwell for a record third-wicket stand for the club.

Matthew Wade's swashbuckling 71 helped his side to 6-153, as Australia representative James Faulkner shone with the ball for the Stars, taking 3-19.

After being bowled out for 57 - the lowest total in the history of the KFC T20 Big Bash League competition - the Renegades were desperate for an improved performance with the bat this time around as they battle to keep their season alive.

They got it thanks to a superb knock from Wade, who creamed four sixes in his 49-ball innings of 71, and was aided by Tom Beaton's handy 34 from 29 deliveries.

Jackson Bird, John Hastings and Maxwell all chipped in with a wicket apiece, but when the Stars again lost their opening batsmen cheaply, the run chase looked as though it was going to be a challenging one.

James Pattinson bowled quickly if erratically for the Renegades, striking Luke Wright (4) in the helmet before dismissing him, while Cameron White was bowled behind his legs by Bangladesh import Shakib Al Hasan for eight.

Their exit only paved the way for the Maxwell-Pietersen show, and the pair didn't disappoint.
