Blues advance, WA out of Matador

NSW top order fires again as defending champions advance to the preliminary final

Former Test paceman Doug Bollinger has sliced through Western Australia's middle order to help NSW Blues waltz into Matador BBQs One-Day Cup finals with an eight-wicket win at North Sydney Oval.

Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, set to form part of Australia's attack at the WACA Ground in a fortnight, grabbed a combined three wickets on Wednesday.

But it was Bollinger who did the bulk of the damage in WA's game-changing collapse of 7-54, which finished with the visitors rolled for 207 in 43.2 overs.

In response, Daniel Hughes fell four runs short of what would have been his second century of the tournament.

Hughes' 172-run opening stand with Ed Cowan meant the defending champions cruised to victory in 41.5 overs and secured a spot in Friday's elimination final at Drummoyne Oval against Victoria, with the winner of that clash to take on Queensland in Sunday's decider.

Bollinger finished with figures of 3-26 from eight overs.

The 35-year-old, who hasn't played one-day cricket for Australia since 2011, kept things tight and removed Ashton Turner, Ashton Agar and Sam Whiteman.

The performance prompted former Australia captain and now broadcaster Mark Taylor to suggest Bollinger may be on the radar of national selectors if Mitchell Starc is unable to prove his fitness next week.

"He's not quite as quick as Starc but he's a wholehearted performer," Taylor said in the commentary box for the Nine Network.

Former Test paceman Ryan Harris agreed.

"He'd have to be floating around somewhere in the selectors' minds," Harris said.

"He'll do everything for the team and he's not slow ... he swings the ball."

Adam Voges and Cameron Bancroft both posted half-centuries for WA but were dismissed either side of Bollinger's burst.

Hazlewood struck in the day's first over when he trapped Hilton Cartwright lbw, before Trent Copeland followed it up the next over with the scalp of Test allrounder Mitch Marsh.

Marsh, who scored 3 in his only other knock during the one-day tournament, was out for 1 when he edged an unthreatening wide ball onto the stumps.

Pat Cummins was rested by the home side, while national skipper Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner aren't expected to play any role in NSW's title defence.
