Match in a tweet: Scorchers all-but lock in a home final with thrilling victory over the ‘Canes, with Turner and Bancroft showing their class at The Furnace #BBL07

The hero: Ashton Turner played his third decisive knock for Perth Scorchers this season following match-winning hands of 70 against Melbourne Renegades and an unbeaten 52 against Sydney Sixers. Tonight he finished 50 not out from 27 to ensure his team completed another successful run chase at the Furnace. While he didn’t top score, Turner’s ability to regularly find the rope under pressure – he struck four boundaries and two sixes – was something to behold. Turner has 246 runs from nine games at an average of 41 and an eye-popping strike rate of 165.10.

The support cast: Australia Test opener Cameron Bancroft notched his second half-century in three innings for the Scorchers in BBL|07. Bancroft’s returns of 75 not out, 15 and 54 gives him an average of 72 this tournament, with his 36-ball knock against the Hurricanes highlighted by five boundaries and two sixes. While the right-hander was annoyed to get out with his team at 4-114 in the 14th over he helped lay a strong foundation and is enjoying the freedom of the game’s shortest format after his place in the Test side was questioned during the Magellan Ashes. Ashton Agar continued his superb form with a miserly 2-14 from four overs, taking his season tally to eight at 21.37 apiece. The left-arm spinner’s economy rate of 5.51 is ultra-impressive and he has also made some vital contributions with the bat during the tournament, including this game where he scored 13 not out.

The consolation effort: Simon Milenko’s onslaught lifted the Hurricanes to a competitive total, with the allrounder blasting 66 from 37 balls and hitting five sixes. Returning from a finger injury, Milenko reached his half-century from 29 balls, with Hobart piling on 101 runs in the last 10 overs. Milenko and captain George Bailey (37) combined for a 70-run partnership after the visitors slipped to 4-68. Milenko’s previous best BBL score was 22 and his display belied his average of 12 entering this game, while he had 60 career runs to his name in the T20 format.

The turning point: The Hurricanes made a flying start to their innings after being sent in to bat, powering to 0-41 from four overs on the back of Matthew Wade’s aggressive stroke play, while D’Arcy Short – for perhaps the first time in the tournament – played second fiddle. When Wade departed for 31 from 17 balls, it triggered a collapse of 4-27 from the next 6.2 overs, with Short (11), Ben McDermott (8) and Dan Christian (1) also falling during that period. While the Hurricanes managed to rebuild after that, they lost valuable momentum.

The moment: He may have been fielding at long on, but Hurricanes paceman Jofra Archer's aim was perfect as he ended Adam Voges' stay at the crease…

The over: It was a costly six balls for Joel Paris as Wade hammered three fours and a six off the second over of the match to get the Hurricanes off to a perfect start at The Furnace.

The stat: Mitchell Johnson's return of 0-35 from four overs were the most expensive of his BBL career.

The victim: Archer’s hostile bowling and searing pace have been features of his maiden BBL stint, and tonight Scorchers opener Michel Klinger lost part of his helmet and his wicket as the Hurricanes paceman delivered a brute of a ball.

The fantasy wrap: Agar finished with 113, Bancroft was next best with 89 and Milenko scored 86.

The next stops: The Scorchers’ next assignment is against Adelaide Strikers at the WACA on Thursday, while the Hurricanes will meet Melbourne Stars at the MCG next Saturday.
