Handscomb smashes maiden one-day ton

Yorkshire reach record Headingley total thanks to Victorian's quick-fire 140, while James Pattinson was again in the wickets

Australia Test batsman Peter Handscomb has stormed to his maiden List A century in the United Kingdom, helping Yorkshire post a record total in a domestic one-day match at Headingley.

Handscomb crashed six sixes in his blistering knock, finishing with 140 off just 112 balls to eclipse his previous career-best of 88, which he struck two days earlier against Worcestershire.

The right-hander put on 156 for the third wicket with former England batsman Gary Ballance in 20 overs as Yorkshire posted 7-349, the highest-ever one-day total scored at the Leeds venue.

Handscomb eventually departed with five overs left in Yorkshire's innings when he was stumped off Sri Lankan spinner Jeevan Mendis.

The Victorian now has 552 runs at 61 for Yorkshire this season across both four-day and 50-overs formats, and is the domestic one-day competition's leading run-scorer with 407 runs in five hits.

Quick Single: Handscomb at the ready in England

"It was nice to tick off my first one-day hundred," Handscomb said after the 15-run victory.

"I'd had some previous opportunities to get a hundred since joining Yorkshire, so it was nice to get there on this occasion.

"I've been pretty happy with my performances so far, which have hopefully helped to contribute to the team.

"I'm really enjoying it and feel that I'm understanding my role more in one-day cricket, so much of which is about having the right mindset."

Derbyshire threatened to upset their hosts as Wayne Masden (112 off 104 balls) struck a ton of his own but Ben Coad's 4-63 saw Yorkshire prevail and go top of the table.

With wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow away on national duties, Handscomb took the gloves for a second successive game for Yorkshire.

The 26-year-old last week said he'd been told to be on standby for Australia's Champions Trophy campaign, with Matthew Wade the only 'keeper selected in the 15-man squad.

"(The selectors) did mention just to make sure I'm ready to go in case anything does happen," Handscomb told cricket.com.au.

"Being in the country it does make it quite easy to call me up if something does happen.

"I'm still working on my 'keeping, still doing my drills so I'll be ready to go if something does happen. Hopefully it doesn't."

Paceman James Pattinson, meanwhile, continued his excellent form with the ball, collecting 4-42 for Nottinghamshire to see them clinch a six-wicket win over Leicestershire.

Former Australia one-day international batsman Mark Cosgrove hit a run-a-ball 80 for the Foxes but Pattinson grabbed three wickets in two overs, as England quick Stuart Broad chimed in with 2-48 to see Leicestershire bowled out for 217.

Samit Patel (79), Steve Mullaney (50) and former Zimbabwe batsman Brendan Taylor (51 not out) posted half-centuries to get the hosts home with nearly 12 overs to spare.

At the Rose Bowl, George Bailey (37) helped Hampshire to a seven-wicket victory over Gloucestershire, with veteran Michael Klinger dismissed for 17 by ex-South Africa seamer Kyle Abbott.

Lancashire's Steven Croft blasted an 83-ball 127 for Lancashire in a high-scoring clash with Warwickshire, the 32-year-old clearing the ropes eight times.

Test quick Jimmy Anderson (2-45 off 10 overs) was miserly for the visitors, as Warwickshire fell 26 runs short of Lancashire's 351 at Edgbaston.
