Stokes, Pune stifle Mumbai to snap streak

England allrounder provides key contribution with the ball as RPS climb into top four

The result: Rising Pune Supergiant 6-160 (Tripathi 45, Bumrah 2-29) beat Mumbai Indians 8-157 (Rohit 58, Stokes 2-21) by three runs

The match in a tweet: Stokes snaps streak! Englishman bowls wicket-maiden and crucial penultimate over to halt rampaging Rohit and high-flying Mumbai

The comeback kid: Ben Stokes was the talk of the T20 world - for all the wrong reasons - a year ago when he was rudely dispatched for four straight sixes from the last over of the ICC World T20 final by West Indian Carlos Brathwaite, losing the match in one incredible sequence. Against Mumbai, he showed exactly why he'd demanded such big dollars, bowling a wicket-maiden early on in the run chase to stem a rising tide before returning late to concede just seven in the penultimate over, just as it looked like Rohit Sharma would steer his side to victory.

The dramatic finish: Needing 17 from the final over, Rohit plundered the second ball for six to reduce the equation to 11 from four. Left-armer Jaydev Unadkat's nerves must have been fraying as one of the great T20 batsmen had him in his sights, however the umpires decision to not call a wide from the next delivery (it was outside the off-side guide line, however Rohit had moved a considerable way in that direction) left the batsman seething. It threw him off his rhythm and he was out the next ball, effectively taking the contest with him.

The milestone: Harbhajan Singh tormented Australians throughout his Test career so it was fitting that his 200th wicket was Aussie captain Steve Smith, dismissed by one that was slightly slower through the air and crashed into off stump.

The stand: Openers Ajinkya Rahane (38) and Rahul Tripathi (45) were outstanding for Pune, laying the foundation of their innings with 73 from the first 9.3 overs in a partnership that proved the difference in the match.

The Aussies: Smith's 17 was a contribution below his usual lofty standards with the bat but the RPS captain pulled the strings impressively, particularly through a tense Mumbai run chase. Mitchell Johnson (1-34) played his second match of IPL10 and would have been delighted that Stokes was his first wicket, while Dan Christian did the job in his limited involvement, making eight not out and taking 1-6 from one over.

The wash-up: Pune jump into fourth spot after that gutsy win while Mumbai stay top, though they've played one more match than every other side at this stage of the tournament. There's no respite for Smith's men, who host second-placed Kolkata on Wednesday night, while the Indians enjoy four days off before heading to Rajkot to face Gujarat Lions.
