Bulls beat the Vics to close the gap

Wildermuth and Hopes help rip through Victoria a second time and keep things tight on the Shield ladder

Queensland have sealed a 100-run win in their top of the table Sheffield Shield clash against Victoria at the Gabba, keeping alive their chances of hosting the final.

Midway through day three, the Bushrangers were bowled out for 127 chasing 228 for victory.

Former Bulls captain James Hopes (4-43) and allrounder Jack Wildermuth (3-26) did the damage with the ball while Rob Quiney (53) was the only Bushranger to show resistance with the bat.

Second placed Queensland are now less than one point behind ladder leaders Victoria with one round left before the final.

NSW Blues are in third, 2.49 behind Victoria, ahead of their crucial clash against the Bushrangers in Alice Springs next week, while Queensland will take on Western Australia at the Gabba.

Queensland will host the final for the first time since 2011-12 if they beat WA and Victoria either lose to NSW or draw.

But the Bulls can miss out on the final altogether if they suffer a loss against the Warriors next week and other results don't go their way due to the congested Shield table.

Wildermuth, who finished with match figures of 7-53 in the win, and Hopes were the stars in the victory, which was sealed with more than four sessions left.

"I asked the team who was going to stand up and it was no surprise Hopesy opened the door by getting a couple of vital breakthroughs," captain Chris Hartley said.

"He's done it time and time again for Queensland.

"Hopefully the young guys getting the opportunity to play around him in his last few games are learning as much as they can.

"Because what he has provided to the team is invaluable - I hope they are learning from the best."

Hartley backed the Bulls to roar at home against WA and qualify for the final.

"We want to make sure whoever comes to the Gabba knows they are in for a tough fight," he said.

"It was a great win because it puts pressure on not only them (Victoria) but the others behind us.

"Whoever wins next round will probably be in the final."
