Lyon's fifty gives the Blues a boost

Test incumbent Nic Maddinson fell shy of a NSW century as South Australia's Chadd Sayers made a pink-ball statement in the Sheffield Shield game in Adelaide.

The Blues were all out for 269 on Monday's opening day, Maddinson top-scoring with 80 and Nathan Lyon making 61 - his second first-class half-century.

Sayers, on the fringes of Test selection, took three wickets in as many overs in the dusk period of the day-night fixture.

Sayers swung the ball appreciably and helped curtail the Blues after Maddinson's 122-ball knock.

The left-hander, hoping to retain his spot for the first Test against Pakistan starting December 15, arrived at the crease with Redbacks speedster Kane Richardson on a hat-trick, and the Blues wobbling at 2-14.

But with resolute opener Daniel Hughes (52), Maddinson put on 121 runs until he chopped a loose drive attempt into his stumps.

Maddinson's dismissal started a NSW slide of 5-30 as Sayers (3-37) and Richardson (3-52) turned the screws.

Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill made 16 and was part of Sayers' rush of victims after the dinner break which left the Blues 7-165.

Test spinner Lyon then launched a counter-attack, combining with Gurinder Sandhu (23) for a momentum-turning eighth-wicket partnership of 55 runs.

Lyon added another 38 runs with Harry Conway for the ninth wicket to give the visitors a respectable total.
