Lyon roars, Ferguson fails in Adelaide

Test spinner Nathan Lyon helped New South Wales turn the screws on South Australia on day two of an evenly-poised Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

Lyon grabbed three wickets as the Redbacks mustered 236 in reply to the visitors' first innings of 269 all out.

The Blues are 1-15 in their second dig, a lead of 48 runs, at stumps on Tuesday in the day-night game.

Lyon's 3-63 from 28.4 overs tied down the Redbacks, with Test hopeful Callum Ferguson failing again.

Ferguson made just seven from 48 balls as his lean trot continues since being dumped after playing one Test.

The South Australians started their innings steadily - Jake Weatherald (25) and Kelvin Smith (23) putting on 49 runs for the opening wicket.

But the Redbacks slumped mid-innings, losing 5-94 as they struggled to gain any serious traction.

Recalled batsman Sam Raphael top-scored with a fluent 61 and in-form Tom Cooper made 34.

But trumpcards Ferguson and Jake Lehmann fell cheaply, the latter to Lyon's offspin for five.

Only a late innings offering of 35 by No.10 Chadd Sayers dragged SA closer to the NSW total.

The Blues batsmen then had a testing eight-over period before stumps and lost Daniel Hughes for a duck, caught one-handed by diving wicketkeeper Alex Carey from Kane Richardson's bowling.

Ed Cowan (8no) and Kurtis Patterson (7no) will resume on Wednesday.
