Hastings blow hinders Vics in Shield clash

The fast-bowler went to hospital after suffering an injury on day two of the Bushrangers match against Tasmania

A half-century from opener Jordan Silk has helped Tasmania take a 100-run lead in their Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria in Hobart, after the visitors lost a key member of their bowling attack.

At stumps on day two, the Tigers were 3-127 in their second innings with the Bushrangers up against it with allrounder John Hastings suffering an injury.

Hobbled Hastings forced from the field

After bowling the first ball of his fourth over Hastings pulled up short following a delivery and quickly grabbed his right leg.

A limping Hastings was escorted from the ground by Victoria physio Nick Adcock and later went to hospital for treatment.

After taking 2-29 to help dismiss the Tigers for 203 in their first innings, Hastings was missed by Victoria during the final session as the home side made valuable ground.

Smooth Silk notches unbeaten 71

Tasmania made a shaky start when opener Ben Dunk was bowled by Scott Boland for a duck, before debutant Jake Hancock was caught behind off Chris Tremain.

But, after being handed a lifeline on 15 when dropped by wicketkeeper Sam Harper, Silk (71 not out) dug in and found some support from Ben McDermott (29).

Jon Holland, fresh off his first-innings five-wicket haul, trapped McDermott lbw before stumps.

Silk will resume on Wednesday with fellow unbeaten batsman Beau Webster (6 no)

Victoria resumed their first innings at 3-54 on Tuesday and were buoyed by a fighting half century from Dan Christian (93).

The allrounder batted expertly with the tail to help the Bushrangers pass their hosts' first-innings tally.

But they couldn't amass a substantial lead and were bowled out for 230.
