Redbacks chasing target of 418

Half-centuries to Heazlett, Hartley leave Bulls in dominant position heading into final day

South Australia face a massive task on the final day of their Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval after being set a winning target of 418 by Queensland.

The Redbacks were 0-29 at stumps on Friday, after openers Tom Cooper and Mark Cosgrove survived an awkward 11 overs at the crease, needing a further 389 runs to win.

It was another day of strong all-round performances from the Bulls, primarily led by 20-year-old batsman Sam Heazlett who top-scored with 72 for his second half-century of the match.

Chris Hartley also chipped in with 55 not out, while Australian Test opener Joe Burns again failed to fire after making a start, this time scoring 30.

SA opening bowler Chadd Sayers, set to take part in the two-Test series in New Zealand from next week, failed to make a significant impression returning figures of 2-51.

Although facing a hefty 159-run first-innings deficit, the Redbacks gave themselves an outside chance by reducing the Bulls to 5-81 in their second dig, only for Heazlett and Hartley to take the game away from them as Queensland eventually declared at 8-258.

There was, however, a silver lining for South Australia as rookie Jake Lehmann completed his second first-class century with a sparkling knock of 126 as the Redbacks tallied 315.

Queensland entered the match in fifth place on the Shield ladder, desperately needing a win to avoid losing touch with the second-placed SA.

Former long-serving SA paceman George collected the most impressive figures for the Bulls with 3-50 off 17.5 overs.

In reply, first innings centurion Matt Renshaw fell for nine, and Charlie Hemphrey went without troubling the scorers.

Australian Test squad member Joe Burns is not out on 10 with Chris Lynn on four.

Queensland entered the match in fifth and desperately needing a win to stay in touch with the leading pack.
