Warner's Sunrisers topple Super Kings

David Warner puts his side back on track for the IPL play-offs with a win over top-ranked Chennai

David Warner and Moises Henriques have plotted a superb 22-run Sunrisers Hyderabad win over the ladder-leading Chennai Super Kings.

Hyderabad captain Warner was as brazen in his approach while Henriques’ cameo at number three was followed by a four-over spell that saw him pick up two wickets for just 20 runs.

The Super Kings remained unchanged, while Hyderabad brought in Eoin Morgan in place of countryman Ravi Bopara.

Sent in to bat on a flat-looking track, Warner’s powerful hitting had it looking as though his team could score 220.

Warner entered the game with four half-centuries in the competition and the confidence showed as he smashed a 20-ball fifty, while Mohit Sharma was punished for 0-58 from his four overs.

Shikhar Dhawan’s 37 off 32 balls and Henriques’ 19 off 9 continued his efforts, before Eoin Morgan (32 not out off 27) and Naman Ojha (20 off 12) helped Hyderabad reach 7-192 off their 20 overs.

Brendon McCullum smashed fellow Black Cap Trent Boult for three fours in the first over of the Chennai reply, before Bhuvneshwar Kumar induced him into inside-edging one back on to the stumps next over.

He departed for 12 off five and although Dwayne Smith (21 off 19) and Suresh Raina (23 off 15) carried on where he left off, the introduction of Henriques stalled then ended what could have developed into a dangerous partnership.

Faf du Plessis and MS Dhoni then combined in a 46-run partnership, but the turning point of the game came in the 13th over.

Du Plessis was on 33 and Dhoni was batting on 20, the required-rate was just over 10 and the Super Kings were in the box seat for another victory.

Then, du Plessis suffered a freak runout. A crunching drive down the ground by Dhoni crashed into du Plessis, then rolled over to hit the umpire before it ricocheted back to the bowler.

Du Plessis had, by then, lost his balance and Reddy had enough time to run him out.

Dhoni had no chance to redeem the situation as he missed a straight ball from Reddy and it sneaked through between bat and pad and hit timber.

All of a sudden, Chennai had two batsmen without having faced a ball at the crease, needing to score 78 from the last seven overs.

Henriques further squeezed the pressure with just a single coming from his final over and despite Negi smashing Reddy for a six and a four, the 57 they required from the final four proved too much.
