Warner denied as Mumbai claim win

Sunrisers skipper amongst the runs yet again but late-innings collapse sees Mumbai chase down target in relative comfort

The score: Sunrisers Hyderabad 8-158 (Warner 49, Bumrah 3-24) were beaten by Mumbai Indians 6-159 (Rana 45, B Kumar 3-21) by four wickets.

The match in a tweet: Warner falls just short of another half-century as Mumbai Indians restrict and inflict a first defeat on Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The slip-up: It isn't often a captain doesn't bowl first at the Wankhede Stadium where dew becomes a major factor in chasing, with Rohit Sharma following the trend and sending the Sunrisers in. But after 10 overs, he may have second guessed himself, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan (48) racing to 81 and setting a platform to launch from. But when Harbhajan Singh (2-23) broke the stand, it started a collapse that the Sunrisers could never recover from, losing their next seven wickets for 50 runs and stumbling to the finish line posting just 8-158.

The bunny: No bowler has claimed David Warner in the IPL more than Harbhajan Singh, with the tweaker's removal of the Sunrisers skipper for the third time vital to his side's win. Warner – who today became the most prolific international run-scorer in IPL history – looked ominous and deposited the Indian veteran for two fours and a six, with the maximum coming from a perfectly executed switch-hit. But the very next ball Warner tried the same thing, with Harbhajan delivering from over-the-wicket and catching the top-edge and Parthiv Patel took a brilliant diving catch behind the stumps to see the end of the Australian and start inroads into victory.

The wicket-takers: Spin sensation Rashid Khan may have lost the Purple Cap for most wickets in the IPL, but it will remain in the same locker room after Bhuvneshwar Kumar skyrocketed to the top of the leaderboard after his performance against Mumbai. The quick claimed three middle-order wickets and was tough to get away throughout, combining with Rashid (1-19) to tighten the grip and extend the match out, ultimately unable to drag his side over the line. The Sunrisers now boasting the top two wicket-takers in this edition of the competition.

The Aussie Pack: David Warner continued his love-affair with the IPL, falling just one-run short of a 35th half-century in the competition. He overtook Chris Gayle as the highest scoring international player, currently fourth-overall. Ben Cutting showed glimpses of brilliance in Mumbai, with the Sunrisers allrounder blasting 20 from 10 balls, but was expensive with the ball, leaking 18 runs from his two overs. Moises Henriques missed tonight's fixture with illness whilst the victorious Mumbai are yet to unleash Mitchell Johnson in this campaign, with Mitchell McClenaghan holding his spot in the side for the previous three matches.

The fallout: The triumphant Mumbai Indians will be looking for three-in-a-row when they take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday, with Virat Kohli likely to feature for the first time in IPL 10. Whilst David Warner's Sunrisers Hyderabad will be looking to avoid back-to-back losses when they meet the Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday at Eden Gardens.
