The result: Sydney Sixers 9-99 (Fawad 4-14, Brathwaite 3-21) lost to Sydney Thunder 2-100 (Patterson 38*) with 10 overs to spare
Match in a Tweet: Sydney Smash turns into Sixers smashed. Fawad's four helps horror collpase as Thunder keep BBL Finals dream alive with massive win
The hero: Could there ever be a more timely performance of outstanding leg-spin than this from Fawad Ahmed? The evening before Australia's Test squad to tour India is named, the Thunder's leggie put on a clinic to finish with 4-14 from his four overs. The reality is selectors would have picked Australia's Test squad long before Fawad took the ball, but that certainly won't stop the armchair selectors getting on the bandwagon.
The Dab: Carlos Brathwaite introduced himself to the Big Bash with a triple-dab wicket celebration. And while the trend has since suffered a serious setback when US politicians started dabbing, Brathwaite is doing his best to keep it alive. He had plenty of practice tonight, picking up 3-21 to keep the Sixers under the pump – that's nine dabs for those counting along at home. But his best contribution may well have been getting teammate Fawad to dab after the spinner picked up his fourth.
The send off: Shane Watson could finding himself having a little chat with the match referee following this post-wicket celebration. Watson was pumped up when he dismissed Sixers dangerman Daniel Hughes for just 20 and put the 'home' team on the back foot at 2-36. It was the wicket that really started the Thunder's charge, and the pumped up allrounder let the dismissed batsman know about it. Watch this space.
The run chase: Sydney Thunder batsmen were in no mood to muck about. Coming from the bottom of the table with a rocket, they needed a big win to boost their net run-rate. If they had chased the total down in 8.3 overs or less, they would have taken their net run rate into positive territory. As it was, it took them an even 10. Regardless of run rates, they still need to win their final game to have any hope of making the finals.
Race to the Finals: The Thunder face a must-win match in their final game against the Adelaide Strikers at Spotless Stadium next Wednesday. The Sixers must also win their final game, which will be the final game of the BBL season before finals start, on January 21 at the MCG.
