Lehmann, Ferguson tons power Redbacks

SA pair plunder Tassie bowling in unbeaten 342-run Shield stand

South Australian batsman Jake Lehmann capitalised on a pitiful Tasmanian bowling effort on Friday to notch his maiden first-class century in the Sheffield Shield clash in Hobart.

And the left-hander is poised to make it a double-ton on day two at Bellerive Oval where the visitors will resume at a commanding 3-441.

The 23-year-old son of Australian coach Darren Lehmann was unbeaten on 179 at stumps.

His effort was almost matched by Redbacks' No.3 Callum Ferguson (176 not out), with the pair combining for an unbroken 342-run partnership.

"He's the one that dragged me through. I probably wouldn't have made the score I did without having him there with me," a modest Lehmann said of Ferguson after play.

The round-four fixture is Lehmann's first outing with SA this Shield season, after making his debut with the team at the back end of 2014/15.

"I was pretty disappointed not to play the first three games and I guess that showed today, that once I got the opportunity, I just wanted to make the most of it," he told reporters.

Tasmania's bowlers made the job easy for Lehmann and Ferguson, serving up repeated short-pitched deliveries that allowed the duo to find the boundary a combined 52 times as they piled on runs.

"Once you get it past the infield, you don't even really have to hit it that hard here (at Bellerive)," Lehmann said.

Tasmania didn't have any answers.

Paceman Andrew Fekete (2-104) accounted for SA openers Mark Cosgrove (52) and Tom Cooper (21).

Fekete was named in the Tigers' line-up after being omitted last round with team management citing a technique issue.

Ahead of the match, Tigers coach Dan Marsh said Fekete had overcome the problem but his return might have been premature.

"He's still got some work to do," Marsh said after play about the fast bowler's action, which needs to be more upright.

"He's still a good bowler and we're trying to get him back to where he was in terms of his action and it's going to take a little bit of time."

Jackson Bird (1-63) was the other wicket-taker, while Sam Rainbird (0-109) was costly.

Marsh admitted the side missed allrounder James Faulkner, who is resting with a toe injury.

"With Jimmy not being available, it really threw the balance of our team out," he said.

But he didn't shy away from reality.

"We've been annihilated in three sessions today but, in saying that, it's a four-day game and this is one day."
