Voges guides Western Australia to crucial win

Skipper makes unbeaten 89 as Warriors beat Tigers to stay alive in Matador Cup

Western Australia have kept alive their domestic one-day cup cricket hopes thanks to a tough four-wicket win over Tasmania in a result which effectively ends the Tigers' title ambitions.

WA survived a tense finish to reach 6-268 and surpass Tasmania's 8-267 with nine balls to spare at North Sydney Oval on Saturday.

Behrendorff impresses in opening spell

It was WA's two Australian representatives who made the most telling contribution with opener Shaun Marsh scoring 70 off 78 balls, while captain Adam Voges steered the ship to safety with 89 not out off 87.

Voges stamps his class ... again

Some pinch-hitting from Ashton Turner also proved crucial with the off-spinner clubbing 41 off 30, after WA's run-chase had blown out to significantly more than a run-a-ball.

Marsh makes important 70

It was, however, a less than happy day out for another Australian Test aspirant with Tasmania's Jackson Bird (0-46) going wicketless, though he did snare this classic catch.

Is it a Bird? Yes, it is!

Tasmania's innings was built around a 148-run partnership between Alex Doolan and Dom Michael, but it was never likely to be sufficient on a small ground and in good batting conditions.

Doolan helps Tasmania to big total

Doolan continued his rich vein of form as Tasmania's leading run-getter by top-scoring with 93, while Michael also impressed with his knock of 89.

Dom hits a delightful half-century

Tasmania suffered from mini-collapses either side of their big second-wicket partnership, though tail-ender Beau Webster contributed an invaluable cameo of 27 from just 10 balls.

"Our chase was really clinical with Shaun Marsh doing a great job at the top of the innings, and Ashton Turner also did a great job late on which probably took a little bit of pressure of me," Voges said.

"It was important to get over the line and the win puts us into the top three for the first time this season, and any win over a very good Tasmania team is very satisfying.

"If we keep winning I think we will be OK, so at least our destiny is in our own hands.

"I thought our guys were excellent today, though we were probably chasing 30 more than we should have with the last two overs of their innings not going to plan."
