Vics on top despite Webster ton

Siddle and Pattinson take two each as Tigers rookies stand up on MCG

An inexperienced Tasmania have proved no match for Sheffield Shield leaders Victoria on a rain-affected day-one, the Tigers fired out for just 241 at the MCG.

Victoria negotiated two overs late on Wednesday to be 0-10 at stumps.

Test bowler Peter Siddle led the charge, ripping through Tasmania's top-order in an inspired opening spell of 2-12 off seven overs.

Siddle, making a rare appearance as captain, eventually finished with 2-41 off 15.

James Pattinson (2-54), who will join him on Australia's upcoming two-Test tour of New Zealand, was expensive in his first spell before collecting the final two wickets in three balls.

There was a slice of history for 19-year-old Sam Harper who became the youngest Victorian wicketkeeper in history and celebrated by taking three catches.

Beau Webster held the Tasmanian innings together, scoring his maiden first-class century with a well-compiled 107.

Queensland-raised Ben McDermott on his Tasmanian debut was the only other major contributor and the pair shared a fifth-wicket stand of 103.

Making the most of overcast conditions which saw the first session washed out, Siddle took the wickets of Jordan Silk and Ben Dunk in successive overs as the Shield's bottom side slipped to 2-8.
