Quiney century puts Vics in command

Quiney posts 111 after Fawad Ahmed picked up five wickets against Queensland

A Rob Quiney century led Victoria's impressive display with the bat as the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers took the advantage in their Bupa Sheffield Shield match against the my Foot Dr Queensland Bulls.

Opener Quiney struck a confident 111, while there were also strong contributions from Marcus Stoinis (71) and Peter Handscomb (50) as the Vics reached 6-302 at the close on day two, a lead of 95.

Queensland were hamstrung by the absence of in-form paceman Simon Milenko, who is set to miss the remainder of the match after suffering a broken thumb while fielding early in the day.

Victoria's batting contrasted markedly with Queensland's first innings, with the Bulls limping to 207.

Quiney and Stoinis dominated the bowling, posting a 168-run partnership, only to both fall in quick succession just prior to tea.

It was a significant turnaround for Victoria after their batting struggled in both innings last week during a hefty defeat against the NSW Blues.

"Our top order needed to stand up so we have made a good start today, but we need to restart day three well and set the game up to hopefully bowl them out," said Quiney.

"The first session tomorrow will be crucial. It is a pretty good wicket I think. They might come out and bat a bit more aggressively this time.

"We expect it to be about three degrees warmer again over the next two days so it won't be fun in the field."

Bulls' off-spinner Michael Philipson toiled manfully in oppressive heat to collect 3-72 off 18 overs, including the scalps of Quiney and Stoinis.

Milenko's absence means Philipson and fellow spinner Cameron Boyce are in line to bowl a significant amount of overs over the coming two days.

"It will be a good challenge for us," said Philipson. "But the team has bowled well the past few games."

Earlier, Victorian leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed, the Shield's top wicket-taker, finished with 5-50 off 27 overs after collecting the final wicket of the Queensland innings.

The match could have a crucial bearing on the ladder with the winner likely to move into second spot, dependent on the result between ladder leaders NSW and second-placed Western Australia.
