Quiney, Hussey star in Adelaide

Experienced pair dominate for the Bushrangers on day one against the Redbacks

A polished century by opener Rob Quiney gifted the Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers opening-day honours against the West End Redbacks in their Bupa Sheffield Shield match.

Quiney's 125 and veteran David Hussey's 75 not out underpinned the Bushrangers' 4-347 at stumps on Thursday's first day of play at beachside Glenelg Oval in Adelaide.

Quiney combined with Test opener Chris Rogers (47) and Marcus Stoinis (51) for sturdy partnerships as the second-placed Victorians seek to enhance their finals credentials.

The Victorians were dominating at 1-221 before the last-placed Redbacks claimed three much-needed wickets in the final session.

Openers Quiney and Rogers put on 92 runs for the first wicket before Rogers fell - he attempted a hook shot from paceman Kane Richardson but top-edged to square leg where Jake Lehmann took the catch.

Lehmann, the 22-year-old son of Australian coach Darren Lehmann, was earlier presented his SA cap by his father in a pre-game ceremony.

Darren flew from Perth, where Australia trounced Afghanistan in a World Cup game on Wednesday night, via Melbourne to Adelaide to ensure he witnessed his son's first-class debut.

"It was a very memorable moment," Lehmann told cricket.com.au.

But Lehmann junior and his Redbacks teammates enjoyed scant success as Quiney posted his 11th first-class ton.

After his substantial opening stand with Rogers, Quiney and Stoinis added a further 129 runs for the second wicket.

Their partnership was broken by Richardson, who bowled Stoinis to claim his second victim en route to a return of 2-100 from 23 overs.

Quiney, who dominated SA's bowlers from the outset and struck 14 fours and a six in his 208-ball knock, soon followed as the visitors lost 3-55 before Hussey restored their control.

Paceman Daniel Worrall (1-86) and legspinner Adam Zampa (1-69) were the other successful bowlers.
