Victoria hold upper hand over Tasmania

Tasmania trail by 322 runs at stumps on day two after a disciplined bowling effort from the Bushrangers

Victoria’s quicks have given their side the upper hand as Tasmania limped to 4-93 at stumps on day two.

Australia limited-overs pair George Bailey and James Faulkner are the not out batsman for the Tigers, who trail by 322 runs in the day-night Sheffield Shield clash.

After the Bushrangers were bowled out for 410, underpinned by Marcus Harris' first day 115, Test hopeful Peter Siddle (1-17 off 10 overs) bowled with vigour before the dinner break but it was his new-ball partner Chris Tremain (2-36 off 13) who made the initial breakthroughs.

Tremain, who made his international debut on Australia’s recent one-day international tour of South Africa, trapped openers Caleb Jewell (1) and Ben Dunk (11) lbw either side of the main break.

Siddle rarely erred from a nagging line and went past the outside edge on countless occasions.

The right-armer finally got his reward when a set Beau Webster shouldered arms to a peach that nipped back and cannoned into his off-stump, provoking the biggest cheer of the evening from the small but parochial crowd.

Allrounder Dan Christian got Victoria’s third lbw when he hit Alex Doolan (21) on the pads in front.

Tasmania’s batsmen found the growing flocks of rogue seagulls as challenging as the pink ball as the lights came into full effect, with the errant birds gaining in numbers and confidence and interrupting play on a number of occasions in the final session.

Earlier, Victoria lost their last six wickets for 64 runs either side of a lengthy rain delay.

The Bushrangers resumed at 4-351 with captain Matthew Wade (78) and his predecessor Cameron White (64) at the crease, but soon lost both to spark the collapse.

Wade was trapped lbw by Tigers allrounder Simon Milenko for 78 while White was well-caught in the gully by Ben Dunk for 64 off Jackson Bird.

Victoria’s tail folded after Bird picked up his third wicket for the innings on the third ball back following the rain delay, with Dan Christian (3) edging a lifting delivery behind.

Milenko (3-98) and Cameron Boyce (2-70) wrapped up the innings.

Bird finished with 3-75 from 30 overs to push his claims for a Test recall, the tall paceman extracting sharp bounce for his two second-day scalps.
