Match Recap: Stars beat 'Canes

A six and a no-ball four hand the Melbourne Stars a remarkable victory at Blundstone Arena

Match in a tweet: A no-ball which resulted in a free hit gives the Stars an unlikely win in the final over of the match against the Hurricanes

The score: Hobart Hurricanes 3-115 (Knight 45) in 14 overs lost to Melbourne Stars 6-98 (Inglis 51) in 12 overs on Duckworth Lewis method by four wickets

The last over: With the Stars needing 15 off the last over to win, Amy Satterthwaite must have felt she had done the job with the ball after conceding only three runs from the first four balls. Unfortunately for her, it would go horrible wrong in the final two deliveries. Her fifth ball disappeared over the ropes for six courtesy of Cameron, leaving the Stars needing six off the last ball. Satterthwaite then committed the worst sin possible by bowling a no-ball that was hit for four by Cameron and also resulted a free hit for the Stars. It meant Melbourne needed just one from the last ball and to make matters worse, the field placements could not be changed due to the ball being a free hit. Cameron simply had to put bat to ball with the majority of the fielders patrolling the boundary on the leg side.

The hero: It took some sort of innings from Emma Inglis' to chase down the rain affected total at the Blundstone Arena. The right hander hit the ball with enormous power as she found the ropes with consummate ease. Inglis used her bottom hand to great effect as she smashed anything that was remotely short to the leg-side boundary. Inglis' innings of 51 from 31 balls included eight thunderous fours as she built the foundation for the Stars’ victory.

The support cast: The Stars looked done and dusted before a superb cameo from Jess Cameron propelled them to an unlikely win. The former Southern Stars batter kept her cool during the last over by striking a six and four against crafty off-spinner Amy Satterthwaite. Cameron remained unbeaten on 23 from 17 balls to guide the Stars home in a thriller.

Highlights: Stars topple 'Canes in ridiculous finish

The consolation act: Heather Knight was the shining light for the Hurricanes with a fluent knock of 45 from 31 balls. The Canes skipper unleashed a series of powerful sweeps and lofted drives to send the Stars fielders on a leather hunt. Knight's classy innings consisted of five scorching fours and one gigantic six.

The next stop: Both teams square off again tomorrow in Hobart in what is virtually a qualification match for the finals.
