Afghans end campaign with Windies boilover

Associate nation finally get their first win of the ICC World T20 in thriller against West Indies

The match in a tweet: AfghanisCAN! Associate nation stun high-flying Windies with fighting, entertaining six-run victory in Nagpur

The vitals: Afghanistan 7-123 (Zadran 48no, Badree 3-14) defeated West Indies 8-117 (Bravo 28, Khan 2-26, Nabi 2-26)

The hero: Impossible to single out one Afghanistan player in a remarkable team effort such as this. Najib Zadran made a splendid 48no from 40 balls, exhibiting the full range of strokes along the way to offer his side a sliver of hope. The best of those was an angled reverse sweep for four that would have made Glenn Maxwell proud. Exhilarating stuff. Seventeen-year-old leg-spinner Rashid Khan was also in the thick of things, hitting a six from the only ball he faced and removing Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin in two crucial blows to finish with an impressive 2-26 from four overs. Mohammad Nabi returned the same figures, and kept his head in the final over, removing big-hitting Carlos Brathwaite as the Windies sensed victory, while Mohammad Shahzad's aggressive 24 and quite stunning run-out of Andre Russell, which was a turning point in the Windies' run chase (more below).

The moment: Shahzad's run-out of Russell. The big Jamaican had appeared injured earlier in the match but bowled his full complement of overs before coming out to bat with his side in dire straits. He slashed a wide one to deep point and ambitiously turned for two, hoping his renowned pace would get him home. Halfway down the track, skipper Darren Sammy turned him back. He reacted quickly, spinning on his heels, and nine times out of 10 he'd likely have made it home. But Shahzad is far from your average cricketer. The rotund little gloveman collected an errant return cleanly, swivelled, and threw, knocking over the stumps with a beautiful direct hit. Cue animated celebrations from cricket's newest cult hero.

The consolation effort: It took five balls for Samuel Badree to stamp his influence on this match. The unassuming leg-spinner tends to fade into the background somewhat around his more flashy teammates, however the fifth delivery of his first over was a headline grabber in its own right. One of the best exponents of the googly in world cricket, Badree bewitched opener Usman Ghani with a special in the second over of the day, going through his defences and crashing the ball into his stumps. He took the next two wickets as well, finishing with 3-14 as he quickly turned the match in the Windies' favour.

The stat: Who says Sammy has barely contributed this tournament? The skipper has won four tosses from four, opting to field on each occasion … and this was the first time he came unstuck.

The wash-up: Well the West Indians have chalked up their first defeat but nonetheless they're through to the semi-finals in top spot, having won four from four in the Super 10s. They now face the winner of Australia and India on Thursday in Mumbai. For Afghanistan, it's the end of the road - but what a way to bow out!
