Voges injured, Turner blasts maiden ton

Young WA batsman stands up after the home side's top order crumbled against Tasmania

Western Australia batsman Ashton Turner has peeled off his maiden Sheffield Shield century in the clash with Tasmania at the WACA Ground.

WA's first innings finished at 9-262, with Voges forced to retire hurt on 16 after being concussed by a Cameron Stevenson bouncer.

The Warriors were 4-40 at one stage, but Turner's 110 off 144 balls helped steer WA to a competitive score.

In reply, Tasmania were 2-60 at stumps, trailing by 202. Jordan Silk and Ben Dunk were the batsman to fall.

WA were dealt a huge blow before play even started when star duo Ashton Agar (calf) and Mitch Marsh (shoulder) were ruled out.

Opener Cameron Bancroft's hopes of pushing his case for a Test debut were dashed when he was dismissed for just two.

And WA were four wickets down in a blink of an eye as the top order folded.

Turner's innings could have been over on one had Ben Dunk held on to a spectacular one-handed chance at gully.

That missed chance proved costly as Turner peeled off 16 fours and two sixes to bring up his century.

Voges entered the match likely needing a big score to save his Test career, and he dug in deep early, helping to steady the ship after the early onslaught.

But his game was brought to a premature end when he unsuccessfully tried to evade a rising delivery from Stevenson.

It was the second serious concussion Voges has suffered in the past six months, and the 37-year-old faces an uphill battle to stay in the Test picture.

Tigers paceman Jackson Bird, who aims to earn a call-up for the day-night Test against South Africa in Adelaide, finished with 2-60 from 18 overs.
