Healy, Perry star in big Breakers win

Some of the WNCL's biggest names put on a show in three matches on Sunday

An impressive century from Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy and strong bowling from England spinner Laura Marsh have led New South Wales to a double bonus point win over Queensland in the Women's National Cricket League.

After setting the Konica Minolta Fire a target of 278 at Hurstville Oval, the Lend Lease Breakers bowlers tore through the Queensland batting line-up, dismissing the visitors for just 138.

Rene Farrell (2-23) put Queensland on the back foot with early wickets, before Laura Marsh (4-27) and Ellyse Perry (2-36) accounted for the middle and lower order.

Earlier, the Breakers won the toss and elected to bat, with Healy at her destructive best hitting 124 from 138 deliveries in an innings which featured 15 boundaries, while Perry scored 78.

The century was Healy’s second for her state and her second highest score in the WNCL competition.

"It’s always pleasing to make some runs individually, but to get the team win is really great as well," Healy said.

"I think this weekend was going to be a really good test of where we’re at as a squad.

"Queensland have got a really good side and for us to come out and  put a really dominant performance on the board will put us in good stead for the next round against Tasmania and then into the finals as well."

At Junction Oval, Nicole Bolton and Elyse Villani combined for the second-best partnership in WNCL history to lead the Alcohol.Think Again Western Fury to a 16-run victory over the VicSpirit.

Bolton (128 off 132) and Villani (142 off 143) fell just four runs short of a WNCL record stand, combining for a 267-run opening partnership to lead the Fury to 2-301.

Sarah Elliott scored a century for the Commonwealth Bank Spirit in reply but the hosts fell 16 runs short, with emerging all-rounder Heather Graham (3-41) and Katie-Jane Hartshorn (2-58) holding their nerve at the death.

Former VicSpirit bat Villani was named Player of the Match for her knock, which featured 18 fours.

The opening stand eclipsed WA’s 50-over record of 257 runs held by Murray Goodwin and Mike Hussey against New South Wales in Perth from the 2000-01 season.

It also helped the Fury to their first win of the WNCL season, keeping their finals hopes alive after three defeats to start the campaign.

Meanwhile, South Australia suffered their first defeat of the 2015-16 season, going down to the ACT Meteors by 18 runs at Camberwell Sports Ground.

Needing 170 to claim their second win of the weekend, the Scorpions suffered an early setback when they lost opener Tegan McPharlin (4) in the second over.

Sarah Taylor (42) came to the crease and again looked threatening, powering the score to 1-60 before partner Bridget Patterson (19) became the Meteors' second wicket.

When captain Lauren Ebsary (5) and Taylor fell in short succession to Southern Stars spinner Erin Osborne (3-20), it was again left to the bat of Sarah Coyte to bring the side home.

Unfortunately for Coyte it wasn’t to be and while quick Megan Schutt toiled hard with 17 from 52 balls it wasn't enough, the Scorpions dismissed for 151, 19 runs short of victory.

Earlier in the day, the Meteors won the toss and batted, adding 45 runs before Amanda Wellington (4-22) removed Claire Koski for 17.

Sara Hungerford (37) produced a handy knock, while late contributions from Angela Reakes (22) and Rebecca Maher (17) pushed the total to 169 before the final wicket fell.
