Hayden Junior lives up to the old man's lofty reputation with fine knock from top of the order in Brisbane

Just when bowlers in Queensland thought it was safe to go back to the popping crease … there's a new Hayden in town.

Quick Single: Australia's tour match cancelled

Legendary Australian batsman Matthew Hayden took to Twitter on the weekend to express his pride in the performance of his young son Joshua, who made a career-high 71 in his Under-13s match for Wynnum-Manly against South Junior Heat in Brisbane.

Hayden played 103 Tests and won two World Cups during a glittering career in green and gold, but the former left-handed opening batsman said watching his son in action was an irreplaceable experience.

"May have had a chance to raise the bat a few times but nothing can replace how proud I was of our son today," Hayden said on Twitter, before adding in a reply: "Very happy … he is really starting to love the game which is all I care about as dad."

Hayden Jr also took 2-27 from eight overs in his side's losing cause, and the young opener wasn't the only son of a famous cricketing gun to attract the headlines in recent days.

With the announcement by Cricket Victoria of their men's contract list for the upcoming season came news that Tom O'Donnell and Will Sutherland had earned rookie contracts.
