Wade, Sayers return for JLT Cup

Test gloveman to play first game for Tigers since leaving the Apple Isle a decade ago, while prolific quick returns from injury for Redbacks

Australia wicketkeeper Matthew Wade will push his case to retain the gloves for the Magellan Ashes series in the JLT One-Day Cup after being added to Tasmania's squad for the remainder of the tournament.

Wade, who made his domestic debut for his native Tasmania in 2007 before moving to Victoria later that year, will play his first game for the Tigers since his off-season move back to Hobart.

The 29-year-old is Australia's incumbent Test and one-day international 'keeper but is sitting out the three-match T20 series against India with fellow Tasmanian Tim Paine taking the gloves.

Wade is set to be a welcome addition for Tasmania, who have lost their first three matches of the JLT Cup, making their final three games all must-win.

"It's good to be back. (I'm) excited to be back amongst the boys," Wade said.

"It wasn't a great tour (of India), we didn't play well enough but whenever you go to the subcontinent you learn a lot.

"It's important the guys who were on that tour come back here and put some performances on the board at domestic level.

"I've had four or five days but it's nice to come back here and get back into it."

Wade's spot in the Test side has come under scrutiny ahead of the Ashes having managed just a single half-century and a batting average of 20.23 since replacing Peter Nevill last summer.

Former Test opener Michael Slater has suggested Nevill deserves a recall while Adam Gilchrist was less decisive, hoping the national selection panel show faith in under-siege incumbent Wade, while also conceding he would select Nevill if given a clean slate from which to pick his team.

Nevill's eight equals List A wicketkeeping record

"When that big cleanout happened last summer, I thought (Nevill) was the victim of a poorly performed batting order," Gilchrist said on Fox Sports' The Back Page.

"Now that Wade's back in, they've said 'Right, you've got to get in there and do a job for us'.

"Six of his 10 Tests he's had since he's been back in have been in the subcontinent, the most difficult place to keep wicket, the most difficult place to bat.

"With an ex-player's cap on, I hope the selectors show him some faith and say 'You've got a few Ashes Tests here to go'.

"As a fan, wanting Australia to win the Ashes, I think Nevill should be back in."

'I haven't scored enough runs': Wade

Prolific domestic paceman Chadd Sayers meanwhile has been called up to South Australia's JLT Cup squad after recovering from a finger injury.

While it was initially feared Sayers would require surgery after hurting the digit while fielding in a grade cricket match, the right-armer is back after a three-week layoff.

The 30-year-old claimed a competition-leading 62 Sheffield Shield scalps last summer but has only played 10 one-day games for South Australia since making his debut in 2013.

"I haven't played much one-day cricket for the Redbacks but I think I've got a lot to show and bit of value in the game," said Sayers, who joins a South Australia squad that has won two of their three JLT games so far.

"Hopefully if I get the chance I can show that."

South Australia play Tasmania on Tuesday at North Sydney Oval from 10.30am, with the match (along with every JLT Cup game) to be live streamed on cricket.com.au.
