Wade laughs off wasted review

Man-of-the-match sees lighter side after captain Steve Smith called for review at wicketkeeper's urging

Matthew Wade has joked that Steve Smith would be "a little bit dirty" with him after the captain wasted Australia's only review in the first ODI against England on the wicketkeeper's urging.

Report & highlights: Wade sparks first-up win

Wade was convinced that he'd taken a catch to remove Ben Stokes in the 30th over of England's run chase in Southampton after the allrounder played a reverse sweep at a ball from off-spinner Glenn Maxwell.

Wade sharply took the ball down the leg-side, throwing the ball in the air in the belief that Stokes had edged the ball behind.

But when Umpire Joel Wilson shook his head, Wade signalled towards Maxwell that Australia should review the decision and Smith in turn asked Wilson to call on the third umpire to adjudicate.

Despite reports that Wilson reviewed the decision based on Wade's signal, the umpire was acting on Smith's urging, which was not shown on the television broadcast.

It would have breached the International Cricket Council's Playing Conditions had Wilson sent the decision upstairs based on Wade's signal; Law 3.1 (a) of the Playing Conditions for one-day internationals states that "only the captain (or acting captain) of the fielding team may request a Player Review of a ‘Not Out’ decision".

The Australians were left to rue Wade's conviction when replays showed no evidence of an edge behind, meaning the decision of not out was upheld and the tourists lost their option to review later in the match.

After play, man-of-the-match Wade was able to see the lighter side of the incident and confirmed that he did not call on Umpire Wilson to review the decision.

Wade laughs off incorrect Stokes review

"No, I wasn’t trying to review it to the umpires," he said.

"(I was) more trying to say to Maxi 'I thought he hit it definitely', but I definitely wasn’t trying to review it straight away.

"I would prefer to go to the captain if I can. (Smith) hasn’t said anything yet to me but I’m sure he would be a little bit dirty because it wasn’t out."

The incident mattered not in the end as Australia sealed a 59-run win and a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
