Lanning seeks leadership tips before WC

Skipper Meg Lanning is relishing the chance to rub shoulders with Australian women's cricket greats before she leads the Southern Stars into a World Cup for the first time.

The Australian side is in camp on the Sunshine Coast for their final week of preparations ahead of their June 10 departure for England.

Before they leave, however, the 15-player squad will mix with members from Australia's previous six World Cup-winning teams at a special reunion event in Brisbane.

For Lanning, who took over the captaincy in 2014, it is an opportunity to glean a few leadership tips from the likes of Jodie Fields, Belinda Clark and Karen Rolton, the past three captains to guide the Southern Stars to glory.

"I think it's a great chance to learn from those players who have been there and done it before, probably under some difficult circumstances at times," Lanning said.

"It definitely wasn't anywhere near professional when we were winning those World Cups a while ago.

"We're very excited as a group to be able to meet the players who have been successful in the past and see if we can learn as much as we can, because World Cups are very special and different to what we're used to."

The Southern Stars are due to play a 40-over intra-squad match on Monday.

They are taking a new-look side into the World Cup, which includes two uncapped fast bowlers in teenager Belinda Vakarewa and late-blooming 32-year-old Sarah Aley, as well as allrounder Ashleigh Gardner and legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington, who only made their ODI debuts last summer.

"I think that's the really good thing about our side, we've been able to evolve over the last couple of years and we feel like we've got a lot of bases covered in terms of different skill sets," Lanning said.

"Our team's been very successful over a long period of time and we're looking forward to forging our own way as a team and trying to deliver as best we can."

They begin their World Cup campaign on June 26 in Taunton against the West Indies.
