Lanning's fitness race ahead of semi-final

The skipper was limited in practice during Australia's first hit out in Derby ahead of their must-win clash against India

Captain Meg Lanning is racing against the clock to prove her fitness ahead of Australia's Women's World Cup semi-final against India on Thursday.

The skipper trained away from the main group, instead she practiced one-on-one with head coach Matthew Mott to test out her troublesome shoulder.

The recurring injury has kept the world's No.1-ranked ODI batter out of matches against Pakistan and South Africa and threatens to sideline her against India in the elimination bout.

Lanning sported heavy strapping around her right shoulder in Australia’s first training session in Derby, restricted to light duties and was unable to take part in warm-up games before leaving the training track early.

Despite the injury, she still looked in ominous touch and was upbeat around the group, driven to add to her 328-run tally so far in this campaign.

Australia allrounder Jess Jonassen says a player of Lanning’s ability is always a welcome addition back into the XI.

"She's not the No.1 batter in the world for no reason," Jonassen said.

"To have someone of her calibre that comes back into the side whenever she can and whenever she's fit enough, it's a real boost to us."

Australia thump India to advance

Lanning scored an unbeaten-76 against India in the group stage as she guided her troops to an eight-wicket victory before being ruled out of the following match against the Proteas.

"She's working closely with the physios, the people that need to know (what Lanning’s situation is) know what's going on," Jonassen added.
