Shoulder injury forces Southern Stars captain out of inaugural UK-based tournament

Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars captain Meg Lanning has been ruled out of the women's domestic T20 Super League in England due to an injury to her right shoulder.

Lanning, who was set to represent Surrey in the competition under the captaincy of England's Natalie Sciver, had previously said she was relishing the opportunity to play in English conditions.

The 24-year-old will now turn her focus toward Australia's next international assignment – a tour of Sri Lanka in September.

"I'm extremely disappointed not to be able to head over to England to play in the Kia Super League," Lanning said.

"The tournament concept and growth of women's cricket across the globe is fantastic and I would have loved to have taken part.

"My priority now is focusing on my rehabilitation to ensure I am 100 per cent for the tour of Sri Lanka in September."

Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars physiotherapist Kate Mahony said scans had revealed a tear in the right shoulder.

"Meg has been experiencing right shoulder pain over the past few weeks," Mahony said. "Following scans we have identified a cartilage tear in her right shoulder.

"As a result, we have made the decision to keep Meg in Brisbane where she will undergo rehabilitation in preparation for the Southern Stars tour of Sri Lanka in September and upcoming Australian summer."

Lanning is the second Australian to pull out of the tournament, after Jess Jonassen also withdrew due to surgery on her left knee.

However, the Southern Stars will still be well represented, with Ellyse Perry, Alex Blackwell, Rene Farrell and Beth Mooney all making the trip for the inaugural tournament.
