Carberry signs with Perth Scorchers

Perth Scorchers have secured the services of England opening batsman Michael Carberry for BBL|04.

Carberry, 34, is the Scorchers' second international signing after the defending champions re-signed Pakistani Yasir Arafat for the tournament, which begins on December 18.

The left-hander has played just the lone T20 international, but has played 100 matches in the English T20 competition, boasting an average of 30 and a strike-rate of 120.

“Justin Langer got in touch and said they'd love to have me on and I'm delighted and thrilled to get out there … it's a fantastic opportunity,” Carberry said from the UK.

"I played there (at the WACA) last year, obviously, with the Test match and I thought it was very well supported by the English fans as well as the Aussies fans.

"I've always enjoyed Perth; I've been there a few times as a young player as well on training camps or playing club cricket.

"To be back again and to play as a home will be fantastic."

Perth coach Justin Langer was delighted with the signing, with Carberry bolstering the top-order stocks that took a hit with the exit of Craig Simmons to Adelaide Strikers, and the retirement of Simon Katich.

"Michael Carberry is another exciting inclusion into our Scorchers squad,” Langer said. "We've stuck to the formula of looking for senior professionals available for the full BBL campaign and Michael fits that bill perfectly.

"He's a dynamic top-order batsman, a cricket tragic – which we like – and a great athlete, so he ticks a lot of boxes for us.

"I'm incredibly happy with our squad and it's a great outcome for us that we've been able to replace Simon Katich in the top-order with someone of the calibre of Michael Carberry.

"We have five or six of the country's best young guns in one squad and they get to learn from some of the best senior players going around.

"That's a pretty special opportunity for all involved.

"It's also a great combination and holds a lot of promise for the short term and long term future of the club."
