Clarke in talks with Sydney Sixers

Michael Clarke may make his KFC Big Bash League debut next year after the Sydney Sixers confirmed they are in talks with the ex-Australia skipper

Sydney Sixers have confirmed they’ve had discussions with former Australia Test captain Michael Clarke over a possible return to top-level cricket.

Clarke, who retired after the 2015 Ashes, played in Sydney Grade Cricket for Western Suburbs on the weekend and has expressed an interest in joining the ranks of veteran players on the international Twenty20 circuit.

Dominic Remond, the Sixers’ general manager, has confirmed that talks with the batsman have taken place but made no guarantees there would be a spot for Clarke on the roster in BBL|06.

“We caught up with Michael a few weeks ago to chat about his interest in the Sixers and what he was looking to do moving forward,” Remond told AAP.

“We only have a few positions available on our roster and we are just working through our review process from last season.

“With the World T20 and IPL coming up, no decisions on roster spots are likely to be made in the near future as we decide on what is going to work best for our club for BBL|06 and beyond.

“It’s a long off season so we will wait and see how things pan out in the coming months.”

Earlier this month, News Corp reported the Sixers were set to overlook Clarke while BBL|05 champions Sydney Thunder confirmed they would be unlikely to accommodate the former skipper.

Clarke had signed a two-year deal with the Melbourne Stars for BBL|05 and BBL|06 but having opted out of the first year of that deal, Clarke confirmed last week he has no contract in place with the Stars for the 2016-17 season.

"I haven't got a BBL contract - I obviously didn't play this year," Clarke said.

"I spoke to (Stars president Eddie McGuire) that I wanted some time away from the game. I don't have a contract with anyone."

Admitting he was nervous in first competitive appearance since the Ashes in England, Clarke managed a “rusty” 48 and then 30 from 17 for Wests against Randwick-Petersham in his comeback game.

The 34 year old had a glittering Test and ODI career for Australia, but is unproven in the shortest format, with an average of 21 and a strike-rate of 108 in 46 T20s.

He has been named captain of both the Thunder and the Stars in the past, but is yet to play a BBL match.
