Rain ruins Clarke's return to cricket

The former Australia skipper returned to action in Hong Kong T20 competition for the Kowlood Cantons

Michael Clarke showed some glimpses of his best form as rain ruined the former Australia captain's return to action.

Clarke was playing for Kowloon Cantons in the Hong Kong T20 competition and he looked set for a big score as he cruised to 15 not out from just 10 balls against the Island Warriors.

But the rain settled in and Clarke didn't get the chance to add to his score in the final match of the day of the Twenty20 tournament at Mission Road on Saturday.

Earlier, Clarke scored six from seven deliveries before being bowled by Jangzeb Khan of the Hung Hom Jaguars.

Clarke was outshone by former Australian one-day player Ryan Campbell, who scored 58 from 37 balls to help Kowloon compile 7-162 in their clash against the Jaguars.

Kowloon Cantons won the contest by two runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method, with Clarke conceding 12 runs from 1.2 overs with the ball before the rain came.

Clarke was set to play again during the second day of the tournament on Sunday, but the wet weather forced play to be abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Clarke's Kowloon Cantons and the Woodworm Warriors were deemed joint winners of the event.

Quick Single: Long-standing record in Starc's sights

Whether or not this two-day stint will lead to something greater for Clarke remains to be seen, and while he was reportedly in talks with the Sydney Sixers in February, the right-hander's lack of T20 experience (he played 34 times for Australia but has never played a BBL match), and his reputation as a caresser of the ball rather than a six hitter, may count against him when it comes to offers.

"There's parts of the game that I certainly missed, and now I've got an opportunity to come back and play," Clarke said.

"I like the fact that Twenty20 cricket only goes for three hours. It's something I haven't focused on throughout my career.

"I certainly don't have any ambition to play Test and one-day cricket, and international Twenty20 cricket, but I think there's probably a little desire there to come and play in tournaments like this.

"This will just be a sample to see if I've missed it as much as I thought I have.

"I love the fact that I'm here. I've said for a long time that through my career I would've loved to have done this earlier but because we're so busy, we're on the road so much, you don't get the opportunity when you're playing for Australia.

"Now I've got the time, hopefully I can do more of it."
