Million-dollar Marsh's most memorable day

A match-winner for Australia, young allrounder is also one of the big winners at the IPL auction

As if winning a match for your country isn't enough, Mitch Marsh has capped off one of the brightest days of his burgeoning career by going for a cool million dollars at the 2016 Indian Premier League auction.

Marsh earned himself man-of-the-match honours with 2-30 and an unbeaten 69 as he guided the Australians to a difficult target of 282 in the second ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee Series against the Black Caps.

As the match was unfolding, so too was the IPL auction, with new franchise Rising Pune Supergiants snapping up the allrounder for AUD$1million - a fact Marsh himself was oblivious to until one Wellington patron took it upon himself to relay the news.

"It's pretty amazing, I was actually waiting to bat and some bloke yelled it out in the crowd so it was a bit of an awkward way to find out," Marsh told Optus Sport's Across the Ditch

"Yeah, look, (it was a) pretty special day but most importantly for me we're back in this one-day series for my country and that's the best part of my day."

The 24-year-old has only limited experience in the IPL, having opted against playing in the lucrative tournament in the past two years in order to concentrate on his international career.

Prior to that, Marsh played 14 matches for the previous incarnation of the Pune franchise in the 2013 season, and played three times for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in 2011.

The decision to prioritise his pursuit to become a permanent member in Australia's Test and ODI teams appears to be paying dividends, with the allrounder making his maiden one-day hundred last month against India in Sydney and backing up the effort with a mature, composed innings that sets up a decider in Hamilton on Monday.

"We knew we didn't start very well at Eden Park, our track record there hasn't been great," Marsh continued. "We were really disappointed with the way we batted. We were in a bit of trouble there and obviously the partnership with big John Hastings (48no) was awesome fun.

"It was a scrappy win but we're back in the series now, (and) that's what we came here to do today.

"I just said to John, just to keep backing himself, watch the ball as hard as he can and try to take it as deep into the innings as we could, because we knew we were ahead of the run rate ... I told him to give himself a bit of extra time and watch the ball and back himself.

"It was an unbelievable innings for him to come in at number eight and do that."
