Starc warning of a bouncer barrage

Master of the yorker expects short balls to have a decisive influence in ODI series opener

Despite owning the most lethal yorker in world cricket, pace ace Mitchell Starc says England can expect to face plenty of short-pitched bowling from him and his fellow fast bowlers in the upcoming five-match ODI series.

High on Australia’s list of targets is allrounder Moeen Ali.

Moeen sparkled in England’s T20 international win over the tourists in Cardiff on Monday, swinging through the line off the front to take advantage of the short straight Sophia Gardens boundaries.

But Mooen won’t have the luxury of a small perimeter in Thursday’s opening match in Southampton, and Starc says Australia’s speedsters can “definitely” trouble the classy left-hander with the short ball.

“I reckon we can probably bowl a lot more bouncers than we did in that Twenty20 game,” Starc said.

“Even in that game against Ireland we probably didn't bowl enough either.

“The boundaries here in Southampton are quite large, so without having that straight hit ... and the square boundaries are back even further (than Cardiff), those bouncers for both teams are probably going to come into play.”

Moeen was undone in the Lord’s Test match by a frightening bouncer from Mitchell Johnson, fending a searing delivery aimed for the throat to Shaun Marsh at short-leg.

Fortunately for Moeen and his England teammates Johnson has been rested for the final leg of Australia’s three-month Qantas tour of the British Isles, but the hosts still have to face four of the world’s fastest bowlers.

Starc, along with Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile and James Pattinson, can register speeds of more than 150kph.

It’s a terrifying prospect and Starc is glad he can call the pace trio friends and not foes.

“Yeah I’m glad I don’t have to face it,” Starc said. “We’ve all played with and against each other for a while so to be in the same team and be pushing for spots especially (is great)  and (we) just push each other at training to try and get better.”

“Someone mentioned how fast Patty was bowling the other day so it’s good to see him going well, bowling quick and taking wickets.”

Cummins was the standout bowler for Australia in Cardiff, clocking speeds of 151kph while taking two wickets and conceding only 25 runs from his four overs.

The 22-year-old put the extra pace down to a measured run-up but said he didn’t feel like he was bowling any faster than usual.

It appears to be a common theme for rapid fast bowlers, with Starc echoing Cummins’ words, and hoping to see more of the same from his junior teammate.

“Generally when you’re bowling your quickest you feel like you’re bowling slow,” Starc said. “Patty has been looking real good through the Test series as well.

“His actions have been nice and he’s bowling some rockets the last few games so it’s nice to be on the same team and watching him bowl those quick balls to other batsmen.

“Hopefully it can continue for five games and I think he’ll have a successful tour.”
