Starc bats his way into records book at MCG

All the numbers from Mitchell Starc's 84 on day five at the MCG, which earned him a place in the record books

7 – The number of sixes hit by Mitchell Starc against Pakistan at the MCG, the third most by an Australian batsman in a Test innings. The only two to have scored more than six sixes are Adam Gilchrist (8) against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2002 and Matthew Hayden (11) against Zimbabwe in Perth in 2003.

Starc came to bat at number eight at the MCG and tonked seven maximums in his 91-ball 84, the most by any batsman at the iconic venue, beating Andrew Symonds’s previous record which saw the allrounder strike six maximums against South Africa in 2005.

Seven is also the joint-third most sixes hit by a player batting in the tail (number eight or below in a Test innings). Starc equaled Harbhajan Singh’s tally of seven sixes against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2010. The only tailenders to have scored more sixes in an innings are Tim Southee (9) against England in Napier in 2008 and Wasim Akram (12) against Zimbabwe in Sheikhupra in 1996. Wasim’s effort is a world record for any batsman.

Starc breaks Symonds’ MCG sixes record

8 – The number of fifty-plus scores Starc has scored in 33 Tests. No other player in history has scored as many half-centuries as the left-arm quick has batting at eight or below. Starc’s 84 helped Australia register the highest ever team total at the MCG, and was his second Test highest score behind the 99 he struck against India in Mohali in 2013.

84 –Starc’s innings of 84 was the second highest score by an Australian No.8 in a Test innings against Pakistan and just two runs shy of the highest – 88 by Shane Warne in Brisbane in 1999.

163.64 – Starc’s batting strike rate against the spinners today. He scored 37 off 25 balls against Yasir Shah and 17 off 8 against Azhar Ali. All seven of his sixes came off the spinners as well – five against Yasir and two against Azhar. In total he scored 54 runs off spin in 33 balls at a strike rate of 163.64.

24.55 – Starc’s batting average in Tests, the second highest for any Australian player in the tail with at least 50 innings. He has scored 933 runs at an average of 24.55. The only Aussie tailender with a better average is Bert Oldfield (1003 runs at 25.07).
