Wary of Australia and NZ: Moeen Ali

England spinner expecting a tougher second year of Test cricket

England spinner Moeen Ali expects Australia and New Zealand to provide tougher opponents than those he faced in his first English summer of Test cricket.

Ali, 27, made his Test debut against Sri Lanka last June, taking three wickets in that series before picking up 19 scalps in five Tests against India.

"India didn't show me enough respect in the way they batted against me," Ali told the BCC.

"It's going to be tougher playing New Zealand and Australia."

In the year since making his Test debut Ali has become a key member of England's attack and was flown out to Grenada for the victory over West Indies in the second Test after recovering from a side strain.

The off-spinner said his inclusion gave him confidence.

After slow start with first innings figures of 1-47, Ali then took three tail-end wickets as England bowled the hosts out for 307 in their second innings.

"Even when I wasn't bowling so well in the first innings it gave me confidence the management backed me, liked the way I bowl and think I'm a threat to the batsmen," Ali said.

After a century in his second Test outing, Moeen has not contributed more than 40 in any knock since, but has scored two tons and three fifties as an ODI opener and is seen as an option to bat at six, alongside wicketkeeper Jos Butler and allrounder Ben Stokes.

"Whatever the captain and coach want me to bat I'm more than happy," he said.

"We see it as a strong batting line up. Hopefully when we all play games and click we can be dangerous."

The final Test between England and the West Indies will begin on May 1, with the visitors leading 1-0 in the series.
