Moeen rides his luck on DRS rollercoaster

England allrounder uses technology to overturn three decisions of out while also surviving two reviews of not-out decisions to post gutsy half-century

Moeen Ali has made the most of the decision review system to dig England out of a hole on the opening day of their Test series against Bangladesh.

Moeen survived three on-field lbw verdicts against him and two Bangladesh reviews to lead England's resistance on a challenging opening day to the first Test in Chittagong.

Moeen was given out three times by umpire Kumar Dharmasena but successfully overturned each decision, while Bangladesh spurned both reviews on the left-hander.

On a pitch already offering plenty of turn, all five England wickets have fallen to spin, including three in 14 balls inside the first hour after they had opted to bat first in hot and humid conditions at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Moeen was given a let-off when Bangladesh failed to review a lbw decision that would have gone in their favour on just the seventh delivery the allrounder had faced. It would prove costly later.

They did challenge another not-out lbw decision but Moeen survived on 'umpire's call, and the batsman was vindicated by his own review after being given out on the sweep in the second last over of the first session when the UltraEdge technology – known to Australian viewers as real-time snicko – detected a faint noise.

He was given out twice more to Shakib in the over after lunch but he remarkably survived on both occasions, with the first missing the stumps, while he was outside the line with the second.

Moeen survived another Bangladesh review, with Mehedi's delivery pitching outside leg, and cut loose with a booming straight six off the teenage spinner.

Moeen had been boosted up the England order to bat at No.5 the tourists could include three spinners and as many seamers, brought up a charmed 50 with his sixth four through the covers.

Bangladesh finally got their man after tea, removing the third umpire from the equation as Moeen edged behind.

It was the fourth wicket for Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who drifted the ball in from around the wicket and extracted enough turn to take the edge for a smart catch behind by 'keeper Mushfiqur Rahim.
