MyCricket Legends: 8-for seals unlikely win

A couple of heroic performances with the ball lead this week's edition of MyCricket Club Legends

Royal Park Brunswick’s Thomas Kimpton had the kind of day club cricketers dream about on Saturday, picking up a devastating 8-3 to lead his side to an improbable outright victory.

Kimpton’s spell saw Footscray ANA skittled for just 14 in their second innings, leaving Royal Park needing just 18 to wrap up a remarkable win in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association North West B2 fixture.

Incredibly, the 27-year-old had thought his day’s work was done earlier that afternoon after he steered his side to a tense first-innings victory.

Batting at No.10, Kimpton was joined by his housemate Rory Callen with Royal Park’s total sitting at 9-116 and still needing 13 to claim first-innings points.

Callen sealed victory with an edge to third-man for four but with overs still left to play, the sides trudged back out with little inclination that the game had another twist in store.

Kimpton proceeded to rip through Footscray’s top-order to have 5-0 after his first five overs, before cleaning up the tail to finish figures of nine overs, seven maidens, eight wickets for three runs.

Remarkably, the trio of runs the left-arm seamer conceded came from a pair of wides and an overthrow.

“It was just an hour of ridiculous cricket,” Kimpton told Leader.

“It was the best experience I have ever had on the field.”

“I bowled a couple of balls that I don’t think I could bowl again.

“I got helped out by one of their players giving a LBW out. It was pretty close, that gave me five and I was rapt with five.

“But it just kept happening.”

But Kimpton’s figures weren’t even the best recorded in Melbourne on the weekend, with Jurgen Andersen claiming 9-79 for North Dandenong in their win over Narre Warren in the Dandenong District Cricket Association.

The 24-year-old’s haul was the second best bowling performance in the competition’s history but he was denied a shot at all 10 wickets by a freakish bit of fielding.

“Michael De Kauwe, our off-spinner took the last wicket – the guy at cover took a one-handed diving catch actually,” Andersen told the Dandenong Journal.

“The team was naturally giving him a bit of stick but at least we got the win.”
