NZ set Chappell-Hadlee showdown dates

Black Caps announce schedule for next two summers, with day-night Test against England and ODI battles with Australia the highlights

New Zealand have confirmed the dates for next year's instalment of the Chappell-Hadlee trans-Tasman rivalry with a three-match week-long series.

New Zealand Cricket today confirmed their schedule for the next two summers, which includes a planned day-night Test against England at Eden Park in the 2017-18 summer.

Dates were not confirmed but England's tour of New Zealand is expected to be after their Ashes tour of Australia in 2017-18, where a day-night Ashes Test has been mooted.

Australia and New Zealand will meet six times in one-day cricket this summer, with three matches in Australia to be followed by the three in Auckland, Napier and Hamilton in late January and early February next year.

Steve Smith's men will seek to reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy for the first time since 2011 when they meet the Black Caps in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne in early December.

Those matches come between Australia's Commonwealth Bank Test series with South Africa and Pakistan.

But Australia will enter the away series well versed in 50-over cricket, coming off the back of a five-match VB ODI series against Pakistan that culminates with an Australia Day clash at the Adelaide Oval.

Cricket Australia and New Zealand cricket have strengthened ties in recent times, leading to a resurgence of trans-Tasman series. A deal struck last year saw a commitment to stage six Chappell-Hadlee Trophy ODI series over four years between 2016 and 2020.

Each series will be three matches – a total of 18 games in the time frame – with New Zealand to host four series and Australia two others.

The upcoming contests follow a three-match series in New Zealand earlier this year, won 2-1 by the Black Caps in Brendon McCullum's swansong from limited-overs cricket.

The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy was introduced in 2004 and had been contested at least once a year until Australia beat New Zealand at the 2011 World Cup in Nagpur. The trophy had lain dormant until revived for the epic Eden Park clash between the sides during the pool stage of the 2015 World Cup, which New Zealand won.

The trophy was not put up for grabs during the 2015 World Cup final, which Australia won convincingly, and the Black Caps retained it with their series win at home in February this year.

The Chappell-Hadlee is just one component of a jam-packed home summer for New Zeland, with visits from Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa surrounding the Australia series.

WATCH: Great moments in trans-Tasman rivalry

New Zealand will play two Tests against Pakistan in Christchurch and Hamilton before Misbah-ul-Haq's men cross the Tasman for their three-Test series with Australia which starts on December 15 with a day-night Test at the Gabba.

The Black Caps host Bangladesh for a Boxing Day ODI in Christchurch, the first of three 50-over matches against the Tigers, including a New Year's Eve match in Nelson. They then play three T20s before a two-Test series at Wellington and Christchurch.

South Africa open their New Zealand tour with a one-off T20 on February 17 before five ODIs and three Test matches that carries through until late March.

NZC confirmed venues but not dates for their 2017-18 summer, which will include visits from West Indies, Pakistan and England as well as another three-match Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series.
