Bolter in the Black Caps' ODI squad

New Zealand include uncapped wicketkeeper in squad to contest Chappell-Hadlee Trophy on home soil

New Zealand have named an uncapped wicketkeeper in their 14-man squad for the Chappell-Hadlee one-day series against Australia later this month.

In a squad hit by injury, regular wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi is one of several players ruled out, with the Black Caps set to hand the gloves to either 26-year-old rookie Tom Blundell or opening bat Tom Latham.

Blundell made his international debut with one Twenty20 match against Bangladesh earlier this month, but had limited involvement, not required to bat and not involved in any dismissal.

"It’s hard to replace the experience that Luke brings, but it's good Tom Blundell got a small taste of the environment during the Twenty20 series against Bangladesh and this will be another opportunity for him in the squad,” said New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen.

“Having Tom Latham as an option gives the squad flexibility and allows us the chance to play an extra bowling option.

"He's done it before for us, but we’ll look to give Tom an opportunity to have a game with the gloves in the Ford Trophy before the opening match.”

Apart from Ronchi, Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan, Doug Bracewell and Ben Wheeler were all unavailable due to injury. Corey Anderson was considered as a batsman only, and did not make the cut.

Larsen said that the batting line-up had a balanced look to it.

“We have a number of options to consider in the middle order and having Ross (Taylor) and Neil (Broom) in there gives the batting line-up a much more experienced look to it than the squad which toured Australia.

"Australia have shown how dangerous they are, but with the Chappell-Hadlee trophy on the line at home, we know we have an exciting opportunity."

The Black Caps will seek to reclaim the trophy back on home soil after they were whitewashed by Australia 3-0 in December's series dominated by centuries from David Warner.

Australia go BIG in nation's capital

The two sides open the series on January 30 at Eden Park, where they played out an memorable World Cup group stage epic in 2015. The second match will be in Napier on February 2 and the third game in Hamilton on February 5.

The New Zealand squad is for the first two matches. Australia are expected to announce their squad after Sunday's fourth VB ODI against Pakistan in Sydney.

New Zealand squad: Kane Williamson, Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Neil Broom, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.
