Skipper Smith leads the way

Steve Smith's productive domestic one-day season continued on Sunday when he lifted NSW to a five-wicket win over Western Australia at Hurstville Oval.

Scorecard

Skipper Smith's unbeaten 73 laid the platform for the hosts' pursuit of WA's total of 8-233, while some lusty hitting from Sean Abbott (47 not out) clinched the win with seven balls to spare.

Smith, who scored his maiden Test ton in the last match of the Ashes series, was overlooked for Australia's current one-day tour of India.

It hasn't impacted his form, with the 24-year-old scoring 70 and 47 in the condensed one-day tournament prior to his starring role on Sunday.

Earlier, Marcus North (51) was the best of the Warriors' batsmen - all of whom failed to cash in after making a start.

NSW paceman Gurinder Sandhu snared 3-66, while Ashes aspirant Josh Hazlewood kept it tight with 1-25 from his 10 overs.

Smith came to the middle with NSW 1-46 after the dismissal of controversial opener David Warner for 17.

Smith's steadying influence was required, with the home side stumbling to 5-149 amid the exits of Peter Nevill (40), Nic Maddinson (32), Kurtis Patterson (0) and Ben Rohrer (14).

Abbott ensured the required run rate didn't get out of hand, thumping three sixes and a four as Smith brought up the winning runs in the penultimate over.

Abbott, who also claimed 2-43, was named man of the match.
